Futsal Court Flooring

Types of courts

Futsal is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. It is the modified form of soccer played with five players on each side and typically played in an indoor format. However, the game can be played outdoors on a flat hard surface with the proper flooring. In an ideal condition, futsal should be played on a wooden or synthetic surface. This game is really helpful for the players in honing their skill, control, and technique. Many soccer legends like Pele and Ronaldinho give credit to futsal for fast thinking, quick-reflexes and pinpoint passing.

Futsal court construction basics

Futsal court construction depends upon the type of the match played, such as international matches & non-international matches.

For international matches –

  • Pitch length should be minimum 38m x 18m and maximum 42m x 22m
  • Run-off enclosed pitches should be minimum 2m x 2m but recommended is 3m x 3m
  • Run-off open space pitches should be 3m x 3m

For non-international matches –

  • Pitch length should be minimum 25m x 15m and maximum 42m x 25m
  • Run-off enclosed pitches should be minimum 2m x 2m but recommended is 3m x 3m
  • Run-off open space pitches should be 2m x 2m

Mark the pitch with lines that should be 8cm wide and preferably white or yellow. The penalty area for each goal is defined as a quarter circle with a radius of 6m centered on the outside of each goal post. Goals should measure 2.0m high by 3.0m wide.

Some construction tips to remember

  • Old tennis courts and basketball courts that are unused can be converted into mini pitch soccer courts with ease.
  • The game is played to goal lines & touch lines on open spaces without barriers.
  • Adequate run-off should be maintained, so that the players would get sufficient space while running if the pitch is wall-surrounded.
  • If you are constructing the court in an open space, then also minimum run-off should be made to prevent the spectators or other non-playing persons from straying too close to the ground.
  • To ensure that, you should mark additional lines and designate the outer boundaries of the run-offs.

Factors to consider

Condition of land

  • While constructing a futsal court, you must seek good land conditions. With the smaller dimension of the field, the land will be used more frequently and heavily than the full-size pitches.
  • The Mini Pitch courts are great for smaller areas. Try mapping out your area before deciding to install a court to make sure the size is desirable.

Building Permits:

  • Building permits vary according to the location as there are different rules and regulations for different location.

Sloping & Drainage:

  • No excessive slope needed (max 1%) to allow water drain away from the court.
  • Does not require a permeable sub-base; a gentle gradient will allow to fast lateral drainage of water.
  • In the absence of surface drainage, have a crossfall of 1.0%, connected to a perimeter drain on the low side of the installation.

  • Make sure that your chosen location for the court can resist the environmental extremities.
  • Indoor surfaces may be susceptible to fluctuations in temperature and humidity: such environmental conditions must be controlled to assure the quality of the surface.
